Mike Eason: Why I’m Running

I love Lake Charles, and I love Louisiana. I understand economics, and I know our state is capable of much more than our performance shows.

Louisiana is lagging in some important areas. In 2017 the nation’s GDP grew by 2.2 percent and the unemployment rate was just 4.4 percent. However, Louisiana’s GDP was down 0.8 percent—making us No. 49 in the country for growth in that time period. Our unemployment rate in 2017 (5.1 percent) was fifth-highest in the nation. This is not acceptable to me. We can do better.

People often ask what we have to cut to balance the budget or what we have to tax to raise additional revenue. My question is “how can we grow to benefit everyone?” I believe we’re capable of working together to meet—or exceed—national growth, and I promise to use my knowledge of finance and economics to aid the legislature in reaching that goal.

What else is at stake? Education. I believe that education is the key to lifting everyone up to a higher level, whether that’s through technical education, postsecondary education or an improved K–12 educational opportunity. The legislature must get serious about achieving stable funding and measurable improvement for all levels of education in Louisiana.

Why vote for me? I’ve got the background, ability, energy and desire to serve as an effective legislator and make a positive difference for Louisiana. I’ve built a successful career out of developing financial solutions and working with people to accomplish them—and our state needs financial solutions right now for everyone’s benefit. I want my children and grandchildren to be proud of the city and state in which they live.

I firmly believe we must work together to make Louisiana a great place to live and work. I hope you’ll give me the chance to represent your interests at the state level.
